Letting the earth rest regularly was a common practice at this time, as otherwise the soil would become poor after a few harvests. Fallow Fields are free of upkeep costs and have a base 1/15 chance per turn to be removed and immediately produce 75 food (EVENT), although the presence of farm fields will slightly improve the odds (making the Fallow Fields more efficient). This represents the extra productivity achieved by the local farmlands from this practice.
