These tunnels will serve as avenues for soldiers to receive supplies and food, and for the wounded to be evacuated from the ongoing siege. Overall, they offer hope to all defenders that, should things take a turn for the worse, there's a way to evade death. However, in reality, only lords and senior officers are likely to use them. Escape Tunnels were not very common, as they were difficult and expensive to construct. To be of real practical use, they had to be dug deep underground and with a significant length, two parameters making the excavation a major task to accomplish. Another issue about them was how widespread the knowledge of their existence was, and the more important the task to dig a tunnel was, the harder it was to keep it secret enough that it would not be common knowledge.
