Fire clocks, such as candle clocks, were used to measure time by burning a fuel like a candle or oil. Originating in ancient Asia, they spread to Europe, where they were commonly used in monastic settings to regulate prayer times. For the wealthy, these clocks also served as early personal alarms by attaching weights to the candle, which would drop and make a sound as the candle burned down.
