Indigo is a plant used to make a tincture either to dye clothes with a deep blue, resistant to washing, or to produce inks. In Medieval times, bright colored cloths are a marker of social status, as the poor will only wear undyed garments often sporting a range of brownish colors. India is a prime producer of Indigo though several Muslims nations managed to cultivate it in some hot regions, like in Egypt.
