Mantlet Wall

Description

This is a low wall encircling the keep, protecting the base of the tower. There is no space left between the mantlet (or apron) and the keep itself, and it can replace entirely the motte on some Norman castles. It makes the keep much sturdier and more stable, allowing thicker walls. This is a rather costly option, but it bears some prestige for the local lord (while adding to the defensiveness of the site).
