Description

The Theodosian Walls, the pinnacle of Byzantine military engineering, stand as formidable multi-layered barriers, enduring through time and withstanding numerous sieges. Stretching across the western approach to Constantinople for over 6.5 km, and fortified with 96 imposing towers, it is an intricate defense made up of three distinct walls: outer, middle, and inner. The outer wall, though the shortest, initiates the defense; the middle wall, taller and thicker, escalates the fortification; and the inner wall, the most formidable, reaches an impressive thickness of up to 5 meters. Atop the inner wall lies a wide terrace, designed for the movement and operation of siege engines. Together, these layered defenses rendered Constantinople unconquerable for centuries, a testament to their extraordinary strength and innovative design.
