Sand is commonly available in many regions and when heated and poured against the assailants will inflict major damage (oil was actually very rarely used!). Heating, transporting, and throwing sand or boulders was often a job that could be done by women if all the men were already defending the fortification. EVENT: As long as the long-duration modifier 'Heated Sand' exists in the region, any besieger will suffer 10 damages every turn.
