Illustrative of the fortification system in Western Europe in the Xth to XIIth centuries, the Motte-and-Bailey compound appeared in France and Normandy but then spread into England and the Holy Roman Empire. The villagers had some security provided by the bailey palisade while the lord enjoyed a strong protection thanks to a keep enclosed by at least a palisade, but often a wall, sitting on a small hill. With the need for more significant defenses, it evolved into stone castles, which abandoned all forms of permanent defenses for the population.
